Artificially-sweetened drinks are often considered to be healthier than sugar-sweetened drinks because of their low caloric content. True, they help to reduce weight, to control blood sugar levels and to avoid the crash after high sugar snacks. But, they also have their downside. Artificial sweeteners can cause some problems with your digestive system and even may negatively affect your gut bacteria. But what about your brain? How do they influence your brain?
To answer this question, a recent study assessed the effect of artificially-sweetened and sugar-sweetened drinks on the brain health of people aged over 55 years old. Researchers found that only those who consumed sugar-sweetened drinks, had a decline in cognitive function after 6 years. Why artificially-sweetened drinks don’t have the same effect on the brain, needs further investigation.
But, please remember that artificially-sweetened drinks or food, if consumed too often, may a.o. overstimulate your sugar receptors, leading to changes in food taste and making healthy fruits and veggies less appealing and tasty to eat.
