According to a recent small-scale study, drinking coffee regularly reduces the volume of grey matter in the brain, where the information is processed. In the study these changes were particularly noticeable in the right medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus, a region of the brain that is important to our memory. However, these changes seemed to be reversable. Just after 10 days of coffee abstention, the grey matter was significantly regenerated in healthy young people.
Although the study showed that daily caffeine consumption affects the brain structure, the reseachers highlight that this doesn’t necessary mean a negative impact on the brain.
