Are you a coffee lover and can’t live without coffee even a day? Nothing is wrong with that …unless you drink more than 6 cups a day. A recent large study found that those who drank more than 6 cups of coffee a day, had a decreased brain volume and increased their risk of having dementia by 53%!

This study turns to be the most extensive regarding the relation between coffee, brain volume, and the risk of dementia and stroke. It used brain MRI scans from 17.702 participants aged between 37 and 73 years old and considered a wide range of confounding factors (such as age, education, income, state of health, water intake, lifestyle aspects) while analyzing the data. The researchers also observed some evidence for a U-shaped relation between too much coffee and stroke. However, this evidence was not strong enough after taking into account all confounding factors.

How exactly the excess of coffee leads to the increased risk of dementia is a question for further investigation. Till then, enjoy your coffee in moderation and remember to drink enough water alongside your favorite drink!
