Fish oil is one of the most often used supplements in the world due to its (not 100% scientifically proven) health benefits not only for your heart, but also for your brain. But it seems not to be that unambiguous. According to a recent study, you may benefit from fish oil supplements only if you have the right genes.

The study looked at the influence of fish oil supplementation on the 4 blood fats (lipids), namely HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides of 70.000 people. It was found that people with the AG genotype who took fish oil decreased their triglycerides. On the other hand, participants with the AA genotype who took fish oil, slightly increased their triglycerides. The AG and AA genotypes are the genetic variants of gene GJB2 (the ID of this gene is rs112803755).

This finding greatly contributes to personalized nutrition advice and helps to improve your health and wellbeing both effectively and efficiently.
