There is a growing evidence that the gut microbes play a vital role in our aging process. A recent study on mice has shown that the gut microbes can even reverse brain aging by transplanting them from young representatives into the old ones. After the transplantation the researchers observed an improved learning ability and cognitive function.

Of course, more work is needed to see whether this finding can be applied to humans. But, this is a first step to slow down brain aging and associated cognitive problems by using microbial-based interventions.
