A recent study not only confirmed the relationship between Alzheimer’s and gut disorders, but also found an explanation for this relationship. It turned out that there is a genetic link between two of them.

To come to this conclusion, the researchers analyzed genetic information from multiple studies on Alzheimer’s and gut disorders. As a result, they discovered the significant shared genetics between Alzheimer’s and:

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease,
  • peptic ulcer disease,
  • gastritis-duodenitis,
  • irritable bowel syndrome and
  • diverticulosis.

However, there was no genetic link found between Alzheimer’s and inflammatory bowel disease.

Another important finding was that abnormal levels of cholesterol form a risk for both brain and gut disorders. The researchers explain that high cholesterol can transfer into the central nervous system, resulting in abnormal cholesterol metabolism in the brain. This leads to cognitive decline and brain degeneration.

Based on these findings the researchers believe that both diet and cholesterol lowering medication (statins) could be beneficial in treating both Alzheimer’s and gut disorders. Neverthless, this suggestion is to be confirmed in further studies.

Please, notice that the study doesn’t conclude that gut disorders cause Alzheimer’s or vice versa. It only provides a scientific evidence of the shared, non-causal genetic susceptibility of gut disorders with risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
