Did you know that only eating brightly colored fruits and veggies is not enough to get the most healthy bioactive components, flavonoids, from them?
First of all, why would you? Because flavonoids seem to be our remedy against all types of diseases due to their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and other beneficial properies.
The more various fruits and veggies of different colour you eat, the more complete coverage of flavonoid groups you get. But just eating them is not enough.
According to a recent study, you need to pay attention to what you eat together with your fruits and veggies as this affects flavonoid bioavailability in your body. It turned out that proteins, dietary fiber (like whole grains, cereals and seeds) and minerals reduce their bioavailability, while easy to digest carbohydrates (think of banana’s, grapes, mango, dates), fat, and vitamins increase flavonoid bioavailability.
So think twice before putting the delicious blueberries in your yoghurt. You’ll achieve the better health effect while eating them alone or with some other fruits!
