According to a recent study, almost 75% of healthy Australians aged over 70 years use supplements either daily or occasionally. The investigated supplements were fish oil, glucosamine, ginkgo, coenzyme Q10, calcium, zinc, vitamins B, C, D and E, multivitamins, and Chinese or herbal medicines.
Researchers found that fish oil followed by vitamin D, glucosamine and calcium were the most frequently used supplements. As for the users, women seemed more likely to use supplements (82.3%) in comparison to men (64.6%).
Another interesting conclusion was that these users of supplements had a history of diseases, such as depression or osteoarthritis (=degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bones), but not diabetes.
Although the researchers aknowledge that supplements are safe, they are concerned that older Australians might overestimate their effect on health.
