Omega-3 fatty acids: who doesn’t know about them! They help to reduce inflammation in our body and help our brain and our heart to stay healthy. A recent UK study added another health benefit of these healthy fatty acids.
According to the study, omega-3 supplementation can reduce the muscle pain after exercise! To come to this conclusion, the researchers gave to an experimental group omega-3 capsules 3 times a day for 4 weeks to build up the necessary levels. Then the participants took part in an intense exercise program aimed at causing severe muscle pain without significant physiological muscle damage.
As a result, the experimental group turned to have a lower inflammatory response and decreased muscle damage after exercise. The researchers also found out that omega-3 supplementation had almost no effect on muscle function.
What does it mean for you? If you suffer from muscle pain after exercise, omega-3 supplementation for 4 weeks will help to reduce the pain. What it will not do is to improve your muscle strengh or physical performance.
