What do you do if you are in pain? Of course, you try to mitigate it in the fastest way, which is often a drug. Most of the commonly prescribed drugs to relieve pain are opioids. They are highly effective but also are highly addictive with negative influence on your brain health.
A recent Australian study investigated the influence of opioid use in brain health of 2.222 older adults aged 65-69 years. The study found out that those who exceeded a safe dose of opiods for a long time, had significantly poorer cognitive performance compared with those not on opioids.
These results highlight the need for alternative ways to relieve pain especially in older adults with chronic pain and prolonged use of opioids.
