Do you feel yourself according to your calender age? If not, than maybe it’s your biological age. So far scientists have identified 5 measures to determine biological age, including the length of telomeres, changes to our DNA (epigenetics), gene levels, our proteins (proteomics) and substances produced during chemical processes in our body (metabolites). These 5 measures have been linked individually to physical and mental health. But whether they influence each other or have a cumulative effect on our overall wellbeing as we age, has remained unknown. Until now.

In a recent Dutch study the researchers analyzed blood samples of approximately 3.000 people. They compared the 5 measures with each other and showed that they have little overlap and predict better biological aging if combined together. As for physical and mental health, the best predictors of our accelarated biological aging were: being male, having a high body mass index (BMI), smoking, suffering from metabolic syndrome, and depression.
